AVID
What is A.V.I.D.
What is AVID? (The acronym AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination.)
AVID is an elective class at Wilcox (and SCHS and MacDonald HS), offered for each of a student’s four years in high school. The AVID program, in 47 states and even in some international schools, is designed to help students be college and career-ready, and to help them navigate the college-application process. AVID’s mission is to “close the opportunity gap” for students (https://www.avid.org/). Wilcox has been an AVID-certified school since 1993.
We are ready to work, with students that choose the course and are willing to make the extra individual effort to be successful in rigorous courses and academic pursuits. Please note: This class requires an application from each student.
That application is online and can be found here:

Some things we do in our AVID classes include:
WICOR strategies- writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, reading/rigor
Group work
Research projects
Field trips
Math tutorials (twice weekly)
Cornell notes
Agendas
College applications
FAFSA/ CADAA
Scholarship applications
