Resources for Student Athletes
Physical Education Credits Statement
Students who successfully participate in school-sponsored athletics may qualify for a Physical Education (PE) Sports Exemption under California Education Code. This exemption allows students to earn credit toward their second year of PE based on completion of one or more seasons in a California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) sport—one season equals five PE credits, and two seasons equal ten PE credits (one full year). All students must still complete PE 9 in ninth grade. To apply, students must fill out the PE Course Exemption for CIF Athletics Application. Then, students must complete the season of sport, and fill out the SCUSD Sports PE Exemption : Season Completion Form which asks them to obtain verification and signatures from their Athletic Director, counselor, and principal (or designee) by the posted deadline. Approved exemptions will appear on the student’s transcript but do not reduce the total credits required for graduation.
Proposing a New Sport
In SCUSD, we’re always excited to explore new athletic opportunities that enhance our student experience and promote school spirit, teamwork, and wellness. Community members, students, and families who are interested in starting a new sport on our campus, whether it be a club or CIF sport, should follow the steps below to ensure the proposal aligns with district guidelines, CIF regulations, and available resources.
Steps to Propose a New Sport
-
Contact your school's Vice Principal overseeing Athletics and schedule a time to meet and discuss your idea.
-
A minimum number of students expressing consistent interest is required to consider forming a team. Please include a list of interested students (grades and contact information) as part of your proposal, as well as other sports that might be impacted by the creation of a new sport or club on campus.
Important Notes
- Not all proposed sports can be immediately implemented due to facility, budget, or staffing constraints.
-
Community partnerships, booster support, and sustainable student interest are key factors in approval.
